A question · sustained attention

The Divining Vessel

A question, held in silence.

A contemplative experience centred on a question, quiet gazing and private reflection, informed by historical lamp and vessel practices. It is an instrument for observation, not a prediction engine.

Inside the app

What you can do

I

Your inquiry

Write one open question if you wish. Use a stable bowl of water or the app’s dark digital focal point. No flame is required.

II

Four timed stages

Preparation, soft gazing, observation and return, in sessions of 1 to 60 minutes. Blink normally and look away whenever you like.

III

Nothing is generated

The screen never produces messages, signs or answers. A second practice, Water and light, is pure observation without a question.

IV

Observations, not predictions

The journal helps you write what you saw separately from what you make of it, and keeps it private on your device.

History & boundaries

What comes from the record, and what is new

EVIDENCEFrom the historical record

  • The Demotic Magical Papyrus, in Griffith and Thompson’s 1904 edition, describes lamp and vessel inquiries in Roman-period Egypt.
  • Its damaged readings are not silently repaired, and its procedures are presented as history.

MODERNMade for this app

  • The quiet-gazing practice is a modern adaptation. It does not reproduce coercive rites, substances or the papyrus’s child-medium procedures.
  • No contact, divination accuracy or guaranteed answer is promised.

Sources named in the app: The Demotic Magical Papyrus of London and Leiden, ed. Griffith & Thompson (1904)

The Divining Vessel is a contemporary contemplative experience for study and reflection. It does not promise contact, prediction, initiation, healing or any other outcome, and it is not medical or psychological advice.
