The angelic literature does not describe one technique. It describes several, and each depends on a different key: the right time, the right instrument, the right name, the right preparation. We built one instrument for each.
The Ars Paulina, third book of the Lemegeton, gives a ruling angel to each of the twenty-four unequal hours of day and night. To call an angel at the wrong hour was to call into an empty room. Our apps compute the true temporal hour from your own sunrise and sunset.
The Heptameron, printed under Peter of Abano’s name in 1559, assigns angels to each weekday, planet, season and quarter of the sky, with the conjuration, the circle and the license to depart. The planetary angels answer on their own day.
From 1582 John Dee and the scryer Edward Kelley held hundreds of sessions with angels seen in a crystal. They wrote down an angelic language, the Calls spoken in it, the thirty Aethyrs and the Great Table of the Watchtowers. Dee’s record survives in the Sloane manuscripts.
Exodus 14:19–21 holds three verses of seventy-two Hebrew letters each. Woven together they give the seventy-two triads of the Shem ha-Meforash, the Divided Name. Christian Kabbalists later read an angel in each triad, the seventy-two angels of the Name.
The Book of Abramelin teaches a long retreat of prayer and purification, of six months in the oldest German copies and eighteen in the French, to win the knowledge and conversation of one’s own holy guardian angel. The Ars Almadel adds a wax tablet and the angels of four altitudes.
The Hekhalot texts describe the descent to the Chariot through seven heavenly palaces. At every gate stand angelic guards who must be shown the right seal and given the right name before the adept may pass toward the Throne.

Around the year 500 a Syrian writer under the name of Dionysius the Areopagite arranged the angels into nine choirs in three triads. His Celestial Hierarchy shaped every later angelology, from Aquinas to Agrippa and the grimoires that drew on him. Angelarium and Oracle place each angel they name within that order, and say which text it comes from.
The grimoires were explicit about manners. The operator prepares, purifies and fixes an intention. He addresses the angel by name and office, at its hour and in its direction. He waits in silence. And he always gives the license to depart. Every angelic app in this hall keeps that order: preparation, address, audience, thanksgiving, return.
